The Curious Goat - Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya

2 factors brought me here - initially it was the amazing and unique latte art(s) which I came across in Instagram; then as I was checking out their account, their posts attracted me. I love their narration for each photo - their posts make me think that they are very good story tellers, and that they are not using the usual marketing texts as an approach.

Judging from the comments online, I thought it'll be hard to locate, but it's not. It's pretty direct, just use waze :D The only fun part (or perhaps confusing to most) is that they do not have a signboard, but again, it isn't hard to locate, it is not that hidden. The art murals on both sides of the wall are easy to recognize.

To summarize my first visit:
It was my plan to go to The Curious Goat, but I got confused between this and TTDI's Frisky Goat. I got to know about both goats briefly based on Instagram's photos. So, upon arriving at Frisky Goat, I did another round of search on Google, only I came to realize that "Oh no this isn't the goat which I intend to go." So I had my brunch at Frisky Goat, and still made a visit to The Curious Goat after that.

I love how quiet it was on a Saturday afternoon, not only the cafe alone, including the area - simply away from the hustle bustle of the city (and practically everywhere else in the Klang Valley). Very, very friendly, warm and attentive service, with cosy setting. Nothing extravaganza, but I like the way it is. It's where I can spend hours sitting, not doing anything. Haha! However, I did not really enjoy my first cup of coffee. It was so so only, and I left feeling a tiny bit disappointed. Since the initial factor that drew me here was the latte art, I actually requested for a special one and I thought given that they're not busy, I was expecting something different than the usual rosetta / tulip but...this was what I got:

Nonetheless I still had an enjoyable afternoon there. My cousin and uncle though enjoyed their cuppa more than I did. 

Whimsical by Cielo Dolci (Again!) - Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur

I was back for my second and third visit! I consider this quite a rare scene, I don't usually visit a cafe on a frequent basis but but...I can't get enough of their yummy gelato! 

I was back on Friday night for dessert. Whimsical is offering more gelato flavours now! Baileys + chocolate chips, Sangria, 70% Belgian Dark Choco, Lavender Honey, Pistachio (Premium), Cempedak, Durian...just to name a few.

I once had the best Lavender flavoured gelato in my life in Budapest, Hungary (ps: I haven't been to Italy though, so it's purely based on my humble judgement). Gelarto Rosa in Budapest serves really delicious Lavender White Chocolate flavoured gelato! It's so good that I had it two days in a row, despite the chilly cold weather and yeah, felt so great to have had it again before we left Budapest! 

From Gelarto Rosa, instead of scoops, gelatos were presented in petals which form a blooming rose :)

Whimsical by Cielo Dolci - Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur

Gelato-loving fans wouldn't find Cielo Dolci new, it's a gelato house with an outlet at lower ground floor of Paradigm mall - selling home-made gelato with a list of rather interesting flavours (I love their chocolate peanut butter flavour). Now, they've just joined the cafe scene, Whimsical Gelateria & Caffe by Cielo Dolci - a gelateria/cafe, started operation just 5days ago. However instead of serving the normal cafe/brunch food, they are doing what they do best, still concentrating in gelato - by offering food/drinks paired with a scoop. Definitely something new in town! (I foresee the hype Whimsical will create not too long from now )

Oh Scooter Cafe - USJ 21, Subang Jaya

Oh Scooter Cafe - A relatively new cafe which entered the local cafe scene in April 2014. From the name to the decoration, it's all about scooters. I guess it's not hard to guess it's run by a scooter-loving family, to be precise, maybe a Vespa-loving family :)

VCR - Kuala Lumpur

A quaint little cafe tucked in a serene part of the busy town. Sitting at the end of a row of old houses, serves only quality coffee and cakes (barely half a dozen of choices available). VCR is like a place where there are so many stories could be told. The industrial-like interior plus the scent of freshly brewed coffee evoke a sense of nostalgia.

Standing Theory - Petaling Jaya

After Butter + Beans and VCR, I've found another gem in town. I know it's very subjective when it comes to our own perspectives of a good café. As mentioned in my earlier post, I've visited many cafés that are so overrated. To me overrated means they have massive crowd despite of the quality they're offering. Quality breaks down to quality of service and quality of what they are serving. And more often than not, the popular cafes out there lack of both qualities that I’m looking for.

Standing Theory sits in a row of old shop lots in a quieter neighbourhood of SS2. It has minimal interior design, with compact menu written on chalkboards, an island-bar/counter, lighting, chairs and tables – that’s about it. Oh there's a pretty interesting round communal table :) Anyway, I have underestimated its location. Back in highschool, I had my percussion lessons there (in fact, that music school is still there, just right next to Standing Theory). Thus I was assuming its location will make it a less crowded gem. Oh dear I was wrong. Standing Theory clearly isn't among the mediocre. It's among the real deal.

The Good Batch - Damansara Utama, Petaling Jaya

*This post is composed after my second visit to The Good Batch. Sadly, I don't think I'll be returning anytime soon.

The Good Batch hit the town in the last quarter of 2013. When the signboard's up and queue started to built as soon as the operation started, I thought, probably, finally a good place which serves good food. Unfortunately I was let down not once, but twice.

I don't have pictures of my first visit but I remembered what I ordered. I had a Portobello Road while my friend had The Ang-Moh. We arrived before 11am and we're already in the line for a table. However it didn't take us too long as we were at the front of the line so to avoid longer waiting time, we were seated on the communal table with bar chairs. When I flicked through the menu, the titles of the dishes immediately reminded me of another great brunch place overseas (it was one of my favourite places for brunch but to be fair, I would not mention the name here). So I thought, was it pure coincidence or does The Good Batch lack of originality? Hmm. I don't know. 

Butter + Beans At Seventeen - Petaling Jaya

The local cafes are springing up like mushrooms after rain. And there are numerous lists regarding cafes can be found online - Top 10 Cafes in Klang Valley, Must Try Cafes in KL, Top 20 Cafes... the list goes on and on. I often wonder, who created the list? After visiting many cafes, the first conclusion I had was - many cafes out there are very much overrated. 

Butter + Beans At Seventeen appears to be my favourite out of all. I love how petite & intimate it is, I love their house blend, I love their pastries, I love their coffee art, and I am very much in love with their homey friendly service. Nothing beats sharing stories over a cup of good coffee. 

Just a small array of pastries. They might not serve the BEST pastries but still, quality assured.[
